This policy explains what information Made Us Look ("we", "us", "our") collects when you visit our website, take a quiz, read our emails or contact us, and how we use and share it. By using Made Us Look, you agree to this policy.
The short version
- You can read every story and take every quiz without signing up.
- Like almost every website, our hosting records basic technical details about each visit.
- Quiz answers are counted as totals, to show how many readers got each question right.
- If you get our emails, we know your email address and whether you open our emails and click their links.
- When you click a partner link, the partner can see that you came from us.
- You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time, and you can ask us to delete your information.
Information we collect
When you visit the site. Our hosting and service providers automatically record technical information, such as your IP address, browser and device type, operating system, the pages you visit, the page that sent you to us, and the date and time of your visit.
When you take a quiz. We count which answers are given to each question, so we can show figures like "% of readers got this right". If you arrive from a link in one of our emails, that link may include the answer you picked in the email, and our email provider may record that you clicked it.
When you get our emails. If you sign up, we collect your email address and anything else you give us when you sign up, such as your name, along with when and where you signed up. Our emails contain small tracking images and tracked links that tell us whether you opened an email, which links you clicked and roughly when and where you did so.
When you contact us. If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write to us.
Cookies and similar tools. The site doesn't currently set its own advertising or analytics cookies. We may add analytics, advertising or measurement tools in the future, such as cookies, pixels or similar technologies, to understand how readers use the site and to measure and improve our partner campaigns. This policy covers those tools too. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, but some features may not work as well.
Partner websites. When you click a link to a partner or a shop, that website and any affiliate network involved may set their own cookies and record that you came from Made Us Look, so they can credit us for your visit or purchase. What they do with your information is covered by their own privacy policies, not this one.
How we use your information
We may use the information we collect to:
- run, protect, fix and improve the site
- send you our emails, including stories, quizzes and offers from our partners
- understand which stories, quizzes and emails readers like, and make more of them
- personalize what we send you, based on what you open and click
- measure partner campaigns and earn money from partner stories and links
- prevent fraud, spam, abuse and security problems
- follow the law, enforce our terms of use and protect our rights
Who we share it with
Service providers. We use other companies to run Made Us Look, for example to host the website, store quiz counts, send and receive emails, and serve images. They receive the information they need to provide their service.
Partners and advertisers. We may share information with brand partners, affiliate networks and advertising or marketing partners, for example to show that a visit or purchase came from us, to measure campaigns, or to reach readers with relevant offers. Where possible, we share it in a form that doesn't directly identify you.
Business changes. If Made Us Look is reorganized, merged, sold or moved to another company, your information may be transferred as part of that.
Legal reasons. We may share information when we believe the law requires it, or when it's needed to protect our rights, our readers or the public.
With your permission. We may share information in other ways if you agree to it.
Where your information is stored
Our service providers may store and process information in the United States and other countries, which may have different data protection laws from where you live. By using Made Us Look, you agree to this.
How long we keep it
We keep your email address and email activity for as long as you're subscribed, and afterwards for as long as we need it for our business, legal or record-keeping purposes (for example, to make sure we don't email you again after you unsubscribe). Quiz totals don't identify you, and we may keep them indefinitely. Technical logs are kept for as long as our providers keep them.
Your choices and rights
Unsubscribe. Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Click it and we'll stop sending you marketing emails.
Access, correction and deletion. You can email us at hello@madeuslook.com to ask what information we have about you, to correct it, or to delete it. We may need to confirm your identity first, and we may keep some information when the law requires or allows it.
Depending on where you live, for example in the European Union, the United Kingdom, California or another US state with a privacy law, you may have extra rights, such as the right to object to certain uses, to opt out of targeted advertising or the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information, or to complain to your local data protection authority. To use any of these rights, email us at hello@madeuslook.com and we'll respond as the law requires. We won't treat you differently for using your rights.
Legal bases (for readers in the EU and UK). We send marketing emails based on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing. We use other information based on our legitimate interests in running, improving, protecting and funding Made Us Look, or when the law requires it.
Children
Made Us Look is meant for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 16. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we'll delete it.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information, but no website, email or storage system is completely secure, and we can't guarantee the security of your information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy at any time by posting a new version on this page with a new date at the top. If you keep using Made Us Look after that, you accept the updated policy.
